It’s been a little over a year since the ReMarkable Tablet has launched - what has happened since?

The Writing Experience: From the start, the company promised that this would be the most paper-like writing experience provided by any E-Ink device all thanks to the Canvas display. It was easy to be skeptical of these claims coming from a new company. However, I feel it’s safe to say that the vast majority of users have been absolutely delighted with how it feels. The Canvas display certainly delivers but only together with the felt-tip marker. The amount of low latency is absolutely incredible. While you can certainly see some, when you start to regularly use the device you forget all about it. Strokes are accurate and precies. Devices from say Sony come close to this, but the ReMarkable is still the premium E-Ink experience.

The Marker is incredibly responsive as promised, sturdy, and the textured grip fits comfortably in the hand. It’s only shortcomings would be how quickly the grip discolours from white to a yellow/brown (caused by hand grease) and how quickly the tips degrade. This was the biggest surprise by most users. While you do get a set of them included in the box, depending on your writing/drawing style they can last maybe 6 months. With tricks such as filing the tips or writing softly, you can extend the life of them. While some can be content with changing their writing style others won’t - this is a problem considering the cost of the replacement tips. If you live outside of Norway, the majority of the cost will be shipping and importing - too much of an expense for a tiny little box. Many of us use a 3rd party stylus such as the Staedtler Digital Noris which feels more like writing with a ball-point pen than a pencil.

The Hardware: Despite the tablet being mostly plastic, it’s solid and durable. The hardware buttons are flush on the device making it easy to store. The rubber strips on the back ensure your tablet won’t move while on a surface, yet don’t make the tablet feel any thicker. The Canvas Display is virtually un-scratchable. The entire unit is incredibly lightweight. The aluminum backing helps gives it a more premium feel, but also makes the tablet a bit more sturdy. As a first generation product, the build quality is absolutely fantastic.

However, it’s not perfect. The first issue and probably the most common is warping. I’ve personally never experienced this despite using the tablet everyday and I’m not exactly careful with it either as I’m throwing it in bags with heavy books, laptop, etc. Yet others experience this were the tablet becomes slightly bent and will no longer sit flush on a surface. The tablet is still complete functional, but can be a frustrating writing/drawing experience. The next issue is the raised display when it gets warm. In a hot environment or while writing in the sunlight, the Canvas display will expand. This doesn’t necessarily impede the writing experience, but it certainly makes the tablet feel soft. Once it cools doesn’t though, it goes back to normal. The final issue the dead cells, usually in the form a while line on the tablet where the ink fails to change state from what to black. It’s not clear how this is caused (perhaps exposure to a magnet or physical damage), but sometimes it can be resolved by a reboot, or factory reset. For some unfortunate people, a replacement is needed.

With regards to the CPU and memory, there’s no real need for this to have the fastest processor or a huge amount of memory. 8GB is more than enough to store plenty of books and keep thousands of pages of notes. The battery was a huge disappointment as it certainly did not last as long as originally promised. Thankfully though this has been improved via a software update.

The Software: It’s functional. At the end of the day, it gets the job done. But I personally feel it’s fair to say we expected a whole lot more considering the price we paid for the tablet. The mobile app is also pretty bare-bones as a read only client with no further functionality and worst of all not reliable when it comes to syncing.

If you take a look at their blog, you will find many promotional images with various different UI designs. Honestly, all of them looked great. The final version looked and functioned rather…clunky. Considering how simple it is (as intended) it was surprising too see how un-refined it was. Too much dead-space such as the left-side of the homepage and in the toolbar (especially while in landscape mode), and far too many clicks to get what you want done.

It could list all of the many specifics of what is currently broken with the OS (I plan on doing this later), but instead I’ll list what I think the company should focus on for the future:

Making Writing/Drawing Fun - It’s why we all got this device. Why hasn’t there been a single new type of brush stroke or tool since it’s release? Charcoal? Crayon? Fan Brush? So many textures that would go great with the ReMarkable.

Update Transparency - Many of us wish that we could have some sort of timeline of when to expect updates. Not hard deadlines, but at least some regularity. It’s not clear when the next update will come (or even if it will be a true update as the most recent one is more of a hotfix) or even when each person will get it when it’s finally released as you need to wait for the update to roll out to your device. If they want to push the device towards business, they need to minimise the staggered update release as much as possible. It’s clear they don’t push the updates based on geographic location, but not clear if it’s based on the tablets serial number.

Hotfixes - These need to be pushed out faster. I personally would be happy with frequently updating my device (especially since it doesn’t take long) to fix a single issue rather than wait MONTHS to have a set of minor improvements.

Thanks for reading my extensive review! What are you hoping to see in ReMarkables 2nd year?
